Radio Days

I love good radio. For years I have been listening to "John in the Morning" on KEXP and have learned so much about music from this listener supported radio show.  Sadly, the world has fewer good radio shows supported by listeners, growing radio air is managed by corporations and advertising.  The best station I know for great music is KEXP, they care about the music and they love to listen.

Some of my fondest memories take place with radio playing in the background, wether it is from driving down the road with my dad or sitting at a campsite with friends.  I will also not forget my brief time as a college DJ where my friends and I learned how to convince people to stay away during the night.  There is something magical about mixing songs and playlists to people you hope care and are listening.

Ailie, I know you won't remember this but Traci and I have for some time held daily dance parties with you in our home.  Many of these dance parties are mixed by John as we dance together listening to the radio.
Just from this morning on KEXP's "John in the Morning"

The Jam "Town Called Malice"
"Town Called Malice" is one of my favorite songs and I love the part in
the movie Billy Elliot that incorporates the Jam's song

The Pixies "Head On"

Sam and Dave "Sweet Soul Music"

The Undertones  "Teenage Kicks"

Johnny Cash "Folsom Prison Blues"

The Clash "Should I Stay or Should I Go"

Daft Punk "One More Time"

Aretha Franklin  "Love The One Your With"

This is the Day by The The

This is one of my favorite songs to dance to, you can't help but get up and move to the music.  The sun is starting to shine and the winter is changing into spring, let's start moving things outside.

Sound of the Big Bang

Last year a classmate of mine, Ander Mikalson, created a score out of the data she collected for the Big Bang.  The experience, and the work, was breathtaking

Check out Ander's Score for the Big Bang
and her video of the performance

I just came across this article on the Huffington Post that also discusses the celestial sounds.

The article linked to the Ted Talk below

There is so much more left for us to know about the sounds above us, let's hope we start to listen more.

To Dance With

Aileana Saoirse Garland was born on September 7, 2012 -her name means “In the Green Meadow, Free.”  Over the past couple of months Ailie has really started to develop her own personality, one filled with smiles, laughter, and inquiry about the world around her.

Traci and I can already tell that she loves to dance and sing and we try to encourage her as much as possible.  This blog is just another way to keep her interested in the world around her as Traci and I attempt to collect and post little tidbits that she might look back on and enjoy.

We have no idea where this will take us or what it might look like but I can assure you that music, art, and strange facts will be very much a part of our world we create together as a family.
Traci and I are in awe of the changes Ailie makes each day and I think the best way to start this blog is with Cat Stevens singing "Where Do The Children Play."

Ailie, let's see where this takes us.

Love,
Mommy and Daddy
